Are you interested in helping elementary students learn about Armstrong Redwoods? Have you considered becoming a volunteer docent? This training is for people who want to be docents at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve leading redwood ecology walks for school groups. The focus is on training new Armstrong Redwoods docents as well as being a refresher course for experienced roving and tour Armstrong Redwoods docents. Volunteers are part of the California State Parks VIPP (Volunteers in Parks Program).
The training will include docent skill development for how to lead school groups, the basic features that students should see when visiting Armstrong Redwoods, and materials to use when learning and teaching about Armstrong Redwoods.
The training will begin with introductions at the picnic tables by the Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. We’ll then focus on activities to do on the trail, teaching about redwood ecology, and will include some of the FAQs about the trees and the park. If you have any interest in possibly leading student tours, please join us.
We’ll finish at the Volunteer Office at the back of the park where we’ll share resources and how to join the Armstrong Redwoods team as a volunteer docent leading tours for students. We plan to finish by 12:30 PM. Bring a notepad and something to write with, snack or lunch, and a full water bottle, and dress in layers. Please try to reserve your space by August 16 to help instructors prepare materials for participants.
