Observing the King Tides 2023

2023 Observing the King Tides

WHEN:

Saturday, January 21, 2023

9:00 am - 9:30 am

WHERE:

Shell Beach, Sonoma County
, CA 94923

Before coming to the coast for this event, please note that storms, tides and ocean conditions have eroded the beach and beach access. Visitors to the beach will need to be able to use their hands and feet to descend and ascend ladder-like cable stairs that may be unstable. These conditions may not be suitable for very young children or persons with mobility or agility concerns. As always, beach and tide pool exploration may include slippery, rocky, wet conditions. Please wear appropriate sturdy footwear. All visitors are responsible for their own safety.

If you’ve been wondering what sea levels will look like as the climate changes, head to the Sonoma Coast during a king tide. In the morning, you can observe the king tide (the highest tide of the year) and add your photo to the California Coastal Commission King Tides Project. Experienced docents will be available to answer your questions. To sign up for the morning event, sign up on this webpage.
If you return in the afternoon, you will see a corresponding super-negative low tide in the late afternoon, more than 9 feet lower than the morning tide! You will have a great time exploring the tide pools and observing tide pool creatures with experienced tide pool docents. To attend the afternoon events, sign up here Explore and Observe Tidepools After the King Tides 2023.

Sorry, but this event is sold out.
