Do you remember the first time you experienced Armstrong Redwoods? The colors, the scents, the quiet, and the majestic redwood trees? Were you captivated not only by the peace, but also by the idea of being among living giants growing in that very spot for hundreds of years? Did that experience spark a curiosity, a desire to know more about this magical and inspiring place?

Now picture yourself sharing that experience with visitors both young and old from all over the world. That’s what Armstrong Redwoods docents get to do! A docent is a guide who helps visitors experience the redwood forest in new and memorable ways.

This workshop is for people who want to be docents at Armstrong Redwoods, including both new docents and those docents who would like a refresher. You don’t have to be a trained biologist or teacher to help others learn about and care about our forest. What you do need is a desire to learn and to share your love of this place.

The workshop will include both docent skill development (how to lead student and adult groups), the basic features that people should see when visiting Armstrong Redwoods, and materials to use when learning and teaching about Armstrong Redwoods. It will also include information about the effects of recent fires on Armstrong Redwoods and suggestions for incorporating climate change into your teaching.

Weather permitting, we will start at the picnic tables by the Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m. We’ll then walk the Pioneer Nature Trail to the Volunteer Office where we’ll share some resources and let you know how to join the Armstrong Redwoods docent team as a tour leader and/or roving docent. We plan to finish by 1:00. Bring a bag in which to take home materials that we’ll provide.

Instructors: Mike Roa, Greg Corby, and Nina Lowrey

All three instructors are retired teachers, and they have over 100 years of combined teaching and interpreting experience.

Sorry, but this event is sold out.
