Pond Farm Pottery: Bauhaus in the Redwoods
September 6th | 9:45AM to 12PM
Cost: $20 for Doors Open ticket; additional donation requested for touring Pond Farm Pottery

Discover Pond Farm, the historic ceramics retreat where Bauhaus-trained artist Marguerite Wildenhain taught intensive summer workshops from 1949 to 1980. Explore her hand-built studio and gas-fired kiln, set among oak-studded hills in Austin Creek State Recreation Area. Docents share Wildenhain’s philosophy—rooted in Bauhaus ideals—and demonstrate traditional throwing techniques. See original tools and outdoor classrooms that reflect her belief: “No short cuts.” Now preserved by California State Parks, Pond Farm continues to inspire as a rare site where European modernism met California craft.

Important notice: After your registration is confirmed for this Pond Farm Pottery tour, on the day of the event, before driving up to Pond Farm Pottery, we will meet at the Stewards Volunteer Building inside Armstrong Redwoods at 9:45AM on September 6th. We prefer people carpool as the road is a winding one-lane road. Please print out this page and keep for directions (seen below).

Directions to the Stewards Volunteer Building: Once in Armstrong Redwoods, 17000 Armstrong Woods Road, Guerneville, you will come to the park entrance kiosk.  Once there, you will drive one mile. Stay right. Do not turn left, or go up any hills. Eventually you will come to the picnic area. Drive past the picnic area, staying right. You will see the creek on your right. Keep driving and stay right until you are in the back parking lot, where the Stewards Volunteer Building is located.  Meet there at 9:45AM. Questions? Telephone 707-869-9177 ex 2.

Brought to you by Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, Pond Farm Pottery, and Doors Open California/California Preservation Foundation.
