The session will take place on Thursday, March 14th, 10AM at the Stewards Volunteer Building, one mile past the entrance kiosk in Armstrong Redwoods, 17000 Armstrong Woods Road.

No previous experience required Explore the world of wildflowers and butterflies during this training. Your participation will contribute valuable data for State Parks to develop habitat restoration plans. Limited space is available.

Contribute to conservation efforts while you hike in coastal prairies this Spring! State Parks is looking for volunteers to help collect Viola adunca (western dog violet) location data in the coastal prairies of Sonoma Coast State Park.  Environmental Scientists will provide information on trail access, training on wildflower and butterfly natural history, and plant identification techniques.

Surveys TBA will take place March through June, during peak blooming season.

What for: Viola adunca has been identified as the host plant for the federally endangered Myrtle’s Silverspot Butterfly. Environmental Scientists will use this data to designate future butterfly survey areas and determine locations for conservation efforts.

Tasks: Use the iNaturalist mobile application to identify locations and abundance of Viola adunca in the coastal prairies of Sonoma Coast State Park.
Free training will be provided on March 14th at the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods Volunteer Center in Armstrong Redwoods, 17000 Armstrong Woods Rd, Guerneville.
