CITIZEN SCIENCE: OVERVIEW
Citizen Science Programs: Overview
Stewards provides opportunities for community members to participate in projects that collect scientific data with an identified purpose.
Citizen Science programs include:
- Pinniped Monitoring - a partnership with the Sonoma County Water Agency to ensure adherance of the Marine Mammal Protection act and the SCWA's Incidental Harrasment Authorization during any activity associated with manipulation of the opening of the Russian River mouth. Volunteers collect baseline data as well as data the day before, day of, and day after any scheduled manipulation of the river mouth.
- Seabird Monitoring - Stewards is part of the Seabird Protection Network (SPN), a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the California Coastal National Monument (CCNM) to ensure that seabirds are not harassed during their nesting and breeding season.
- Marine Debris Monitoring - Stewards has been collecting and monitoring marine debris for many years. The project continues monthly at Bodega Dunes State Beach.
- Water Quality Monitoring - Water quality data has been collected by volunteers since 2003, in conjunction with the restoraiton of the watershed as a viable fishery.
